Artist Studios in the Fab Lab
With our new expansion comes new opportunities for you, our members!
Our artist studios come with a 24/7 membership (24 hour access, every day of the week)! Parking off of the Benton St side of our space gives you direct access into our artist studios, which will be accessible only by studio space renters.
The main entrance to the Fab Lab is the ONLY entrance that will be used daily, but the side entrances can be used to bring in materials, supplies, furniture, etc.
Choose from a variety of sizes, from small to large. Each space is lockable (or has a locked closet area in it), and is in the quieter areas of the Lab.
We have two different locations, one with lots of natural light and 13 foot high ceilings, which means that you never will feel closed in, and the LED full spectrum lighting ensures that you will be able to see your work, no matter what time of the day or night you choose to work. The other location is more office-like, with a more finished look and an upscale feel.
Studio Sizes and Prices
We have four different sizes of space. These spaces INCLUDE the membership cost, so the per month is the full package amount.
Small Studio Space 1 – 7’x10′ (the size of a small bedroom, you can get some large work done, as well as storing a bunch of materials) $300 per month. This comes with an external window. Lots of natural light.
Small Studio Space 2 – 7’x10′ (the size of a small bedroom, you can get some large work done, as well as storing a bunch of materials) $300 per month.
This one is directly across from the Artist Studio main entrance. It has a tiled floor.
Small Studio Space – 7’x10′ (the size of a small bedroom, you can get some large work done, as well as storing a bunch of materials) $300 per month. This is the one space that has carpeting.
Large Studio Space – 11’x12′ with water access in room (the size of a large bedroom). We have one of these for $400/month.
Large Sound Studio – 11’x15′ sound studio space. We have one of these. $500/month This comes with an internal window (from when it was a sound studio).
This one is NOW OPEN FOR RENTAL! Click here to rent!
Open Studios 1-6 – 11’x18′ open window space. This space has the most natural light, and two windows (facing east and south). It has 16 foot ceilings, and will also be a shared space with other studio members. There are separate storage spaces in the studio for equipment, the center area is open for you to spread out while you are working. These spaces are accessible during your regular membership times They do NOT come with a membership, they are rentable once you become a member at any level. $50/month. Each studio cubby is approx. 6’x6′.
Yes, with some caveats. While we do not mind if you share your space with another artist, that artist MUST BE A 24/7 MEMBER! This means that they can not sign up for a weekend membership and get access to an artist studio. It is the only way to be fair about things. You also will have a PRIMARY MEMBER who is in charge of the full payment and responsible for the rent every month. We will not split the payment between two of you. So the primary member has their name on the paperwork, and is responsible for the full amount. How you split the check is between y’all. We will charge one card only for the full amount.
WE NEED TO KNOW IT IS BEING SHARED. You can’t just assume we know the new member is with you. Communicate so that they can get the proper access and we know that the new person should be in that space, using up your paints.
This rule does not necessarily apply to the two spaces that are already shared in the open studio space. Since there is already a shared agreement, whoever is sharing the space MUST be ok with splitting the space further. The alternative is to break the space into two small spaces, which no one will be as happy about.
Studio Perks and Expectations
A studio space comes with a 24/7 membership. What does that mean? It means you will have all hours access. This is a $150/month membership. Fab Lab membership includes free safety/basic training on every piece of equipment in the Fab Lab along with the ability to use the public spaces at any time.
With a studio space rental, you can use the conference room free of charge for 2 to 4 hours a month (if you want to hold a group meeting, are planning an event, etc. This does NOT include teaching or any other thing where non-members pay you money for access).
You also get 20% off any paid class you want to take at the Fab Lab as well. Also due to the way the rent works with the membership, there is no discount associated with these spaces, so the full membership is $150.00 for everyone.
Each space comes with at least one standard electrical outlet, and a lockable door or storage area.
The membership and perks costs in at $150 per month before we get to renting out a studio space. No, we will not split it out for you. Yes, it is a package deal only. No, Karen, you can not speak to the manager.
You are expected to keep the open space near and around your space clean and tidy so that the other members can use it as well. If there is paint to dry, or an object can not be moved for a while, we can work out those details as they come.
Being artist studios, we don’t mind a bit of paint splatter, noise, etc. within reasonable limits. Just be courteous to your fellow renters, and don’t go all Jackson Pollack with the paintbrush.
We also do NOT have the ventilation for stains and varnishes, and sanding etc. should be done in the wood shop, not around your fellow renter’s paintings and artworks. Pretty much just be thoughtful and considerate of the space and other members. Cool? Cool.
How does it work?
To rent a studio space, you start by paying for your first month and last month. This means we need two months of rent at the time of rental. This is NOT A DEPOSIT, it is your last month’s rent. Every month you want to keep your space, you simply pay rent for that month. Once you stop paying rent, your pre-payed last month kicks in, and you have 30 more days to finish up projects and clean out your stuff.
This ensures that we do not have a situation with non-payment in the event that your life or situation changes. As much as we don’t like the fact that we have to be focused on the money, the unfortunate truth is that we still have rent, electricity, water, etc. to pay for as well, so we can not afford to wonder if the rent check is coming or not.
So by renting a space, you are agreeing to stay on for at least two months, and you will pay for each month as it comes. Stay for years, if you would like! Just make that monthly payment and you are golden.
BUT in the event that we do not receive the rent of a person in a studio, and have not seen you over the past month? Then your LAST month kicks in, and you have 30 days to clear out your studio space so that we can rent it to someone on our waiting list.
So that brings up the question of ‘what if I have stuff there and I don’t have a space anymore?’ At the end of your LAST month rent, we will clear out your space, and store your left-behind belongings.
There will also be a storage fee of at least $50 per month, because we also do not have the money to become a free storage unit. The cost of the storage will depend on the amount of material and supplies that were left behind, so while $50 is the minimum, it does not mean it is the maximum.
The property will also not be given back until the storage fee is paid. You will be signing a lease agreement with these as the terms at the time you take the space.
After THREE MONTHS of storage, the supplies and materials will become the Fab Lab’s, will be thrown out, or will otherwise cease to be the owners’ property.
