Welcome to the new year, Fabbers! I know I am late by a few weeks, but it is the thought that counts, right? I hope you all had a great holiday season and a smooth transition into the normal times again. I also hope you are dressed warmly, because it has stared to act like winter around here.
Luckily for all of us, the Fab Lab scoffs at the weather, and we have a bunch of amazing things in the works for you all! Check below for the classes that are coming up soon! We have a great series starting on designing with CAD, so you can do everything from building a box for a project to creating that perpetual motion machine you have been thinking about using Fusion 360. Continue with the tech by signing up for our class on building your own AI voice recognition system! We also will be having bath bomb making class for a parent/child combo, and come with a date for a bath-bomb/Sugar Scrub making date night on February ninth.
Beyond those, we have a very fun March being planned! We are doing a Harry Potter themed month, titled “Fantastic Fancies and How to Make Them”! We will have classes for adults, teens, and kids all throughout the month, all themed after the Harry Potter books and movies, with a Potter Party at the end of the month for everyone to show off their goodies. We will talk more about the specifics as we get closer, but get ready for a magical time..
We also have started a new Instagram account as we work towards a name change to the Iowa City Fab Lab. Like and follow us for all the cool happenings going on! Join us @icfablab! Look forward in the next weeks for more announcements as we add more classes and opportunities to help the community.
Last weekend we hosted the Iowa City Boy Scouts with their pinewood derby cars. The scouts could come in and use our tools to create their pinewood derby car, check it for the right weight, and practice race on a track. There were some great designs, and it was a lot of fun for everyone involved! We hope we can do it again next year, as well.
We are also going to be announcing our Summer Camps around mid-February, so any of you who want to sign up early, it will be available soon! I have not decided on all of the camps yet, but I do know we are going to be adding more Minecraft camps this year, so be ready for more info on that in the next few weeks.
All in all, this has been a great year so far! CES, the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas was two weeks ago, and we saw some amazing things! If you check out our Instagram feed, you can see pics and video of the latest in hologram tech, projected touchscreens, 3D printing, CNC machines, electronics, and Frickin’ Flying Jet Bikes! Flying. Jet. Bikes. Seriously! It was a great time, and we are still posting pics and videos of the trip.
