Don’t tell your kids this, but Minecraft is a great way to learn! Studies are showing that kids that play Minecraft do better in physical sciences like Chemistry later in life! This camp is not about letting your kids play Minecraft all day. The campers form teams and have to design defenses for their base, which BLOWS UP if the other team reaches it! They have all week to work as a team designing and building traps and defenses. The last day of camp, they get to go head-to-head with another team, to see who can blow up the other team’s base first! This camp teaches planning skills, teamwork, and coordination!

Designing in 3D is more than just using a 3D printer. We will study different types of 3D design throughout the week, including using sculpture with clay, armatures with wire, stacking methods with cardboard, forced perspective techniques, and designing using 3D modeling software. Being able to picture things in 3 dimensions is one of the most important skills for artists and engineers to have! Explore and play with different methods this week and build up your skills, or gain some new ones!

Mods are some of the most popular things in Minecraft! Come and learn how it is done, and make your own modified weapons, creatures, or even biomes! Our software has different levels from visual design to full programming in Java! No matter what skill level you have, our software and camp counselors can help you to create something that is completely yours in Minecraft! So whether you need boots that can make you run 100 miles per hour or have a sword that makes a dolphin spawn whenever you hit something, this camp is for you!

What would happen if the power went off for a few days? What about a zombie apocalypse? What if you found yourself lost in the woods? Would you have the skills to survive? Even to thrive? In Survival Camp, we work towards building the skills and knowledge needed to survive! We will learn basic first-aid skills, learn the basics of gardening with our partners at Backyard Abundance, and learn some outdoor survival skills as we build a survival shelter or two! From where to find food and water in nature and a city to how to stay warm and dry in an emergency, this is a great camp for anyone who likes to be prepared!  (Note: We will spend A LOT of time outdoors this week!)

Animation has been around since long before movies. Humans have been creating the illusion of motion for thousands of years. Now animation is used everywhere, from full films like Toy Story to small things like pop-up ads on your phone (I didn’t say all animation was used for good). We will spend a week learning about different types of animation, from stop-motion to computer animation. We will go into the 12 rules of animation, and learn about storyboarding, scripting, and practical effects as well. There will also be an animation show spectacular at the end of the week for parents!

One of my favorite comics growing up was Spy vs. Spy. I loved the way each character would outsmart the other, and sometimes outsmart themselves! This camp will focus on a different spy activity each day, from codes and code breaking to secret hiding spaces, spy gadgets, and the arts of misdirection. We will spend some time outdoors, some time coding on the computers, and some time creating our own gadgets and devices! Come and join us as we delve into the world of misdirection!

Teamwork is the skill of the day at our most popular camp! In Minecraft Teams, you will be assigned to a team with two missions: First, create traps and mazes to keep the other team from blowing up your base! (Hint; they can do it by pushing one button.) Second, head out to the other team’s base and try to blow up theirs! You have all week with your team to build traps and blocks to keep the other team out! The last day of camp, you get to go against the team in a head-to-head competition. The first team to blow up the other’s base wins! This camp teaches teamwork, planning, and coordination skills.

Have you always wanted to try playing Dungeons and Dragons? Have you already played and want to hone your skills, learn to DM, or just create a treasure-trove of different characters? This is the camp for you! We will spend the week working on different aspects of the game, from designing a simple campaign to the different aspects of fighting and spell-slinging! We will create our own monsters, as well as our own heroes! We will talk a bit about probability and rolling dice, and we will spend some time in combat, player vs player and group vs BBEG. This will be a fast paced week full of high adventures and (hopefully!) high rolls.

Modifying video games is a great skill to have. Whether you are going into game design or just want to know what goes in to creating your own video games, this camp can start you down the right path! Using our software, we will teach your camper how to modify Minecraft, so you can create new weapons, new mobs (monsters and creatures), and even whole new minerals and building materials! Our software comes with everything from visual design for beginners to advanced Javascript editing, so no matter the skill level, they will be able to create awesome new Mods for Minecraft!

Have you ever wanted to look like your favorite video game character? Have you ever wanted to have a tool or weapon that they carry? In our popular cosplay camp, that is exactly what we will do! The campers will spend the first day designing their item (no full Iron Man Suits. We keep it down to something that is possible) and then we will spend the rest of the week creating it! We will use cardboard, glue, foam, 3D printing, laser cutting, paint, air dry clay, and anything else that we may need to create a prop or armor piece of the camper’s choice!

The first film was of a horse galloping. One gentleman had bet another that all four legs of a horse were in the air when they galloped, and they set up a series of cameras to take pictures as the horse galloped by! Moving pictures were around before that in flip books and other short animations, and today there is animation everywhere, from the ad at the bottom of your phone app to the silver screen. In this camp we will learn about the 12 rules of animation, and work on different individual and group projects with computer animation, stop motion animation, and other tricks like persistence of vision and forced perspective. There is plenty to learn, and even more to do in this activity-packed camp!

A new one this year, suggested by a camper from last year! Minecraft Mazes will be all about honing your planning skills and critical thinking (but don’t tell your camper that). Each student will be creating a maze to confound and confuse (and most likely frustrate) the other campers! Half of the time will be spent on their mazes, with daily challenges for everyone to put into their labyrinth. The other half will be a group session/discussion on how to create sneaky traps, secret passages, redstone doors, and more. We will stretch their young minds and show them that a pinch of planning, a crumb of cunning, and a trifle of teamwork can make you a master of the maze!

If you like making traps, hidden passages, and mazes, then this camp is for you! In Minecraft Teams we put campers together into teams with one goal: To keep their home base safe. The only problem is, the other team is doing the same thing! We will spend a week learning how to build tricks and traps, and designing the perfect fort to protect your base. One button push, and the base goes BOOM! On Friday, there will be a timed competition to see which team can get to the other base first, and blow it up! Winner takes all!  Note to parents: We don’t spend all week playing minecraft. There are lots of team-building sessions and planning away from the computers as well. This camp is great for communication, teamwork, and planning.

There are so many different ways to draw! From simple stick figures to complex realistic portraits, a style exists for everyone. This week we will work on developing your own personal style, as well as giving you new tricks in drawing perspectives, colors, and styles! We also will take a trip this week to the field museum to practice still-life drawing skills. Bring out your inner artist and learn a new skill or two with us!

One of my favorite things with the original Nintendo (showing my age) was the Game Genie. You could plug that thing in and get infinite lives, the best weapons, and make any game beatable (and more fun). Modifying the rules has always been a popular pastime for humanity, and with this camp, your camper will learn how to modify the rules for Minecraft! From creating a Batman Grappling Hook to making a pair of boots that let you jump 30 feet in the air, the rules are your plaything! Take that, Gravity! Our software starts off with visual programming for beginners, and can get as complex as changing the javacode for more advanced users! Any way you do it, this camp shows you how to create your own weapons, mobs, or even biomes in one of your favorite games!

Ok, it is not, like, the really FAMOUS Space Camp, (otherwise I would have had to hire Tate Donovan) but we can do our best Fab Lab version of it! We will spend our days on different topics that any astronaut or space scientist needs to know! We will do space based physics (mass vs weight), air resistance, Space Food, Mars/Moon colonization, heat/cold in space, space materials, propulsion systems, and a bunch more. Space is a big place, and this is a big camp! We will spend plenty of time building and creating, this won’t be your college physics class. We will keep it low on the math and high on the adventure!

Animation is awesome. From the stop motion battles from ‘Jason and the Argonauts’ in the 50’s to the amazing effects in ‘How to Train your Dragon’, almost every movie relies on animation at least a little bit these days. Did you know they used computer animation in almost every scene in Mad Max: Fury Road? It was not for the car chases. It was to hide the tire tracks from the previous takes! Sometimes in your face, and sometimes very subtle, animation is everywhere. We will learn the basics with flipbooks and storyboards, as well as working on stop motion movies in groups and computer animation individual projects!

Have you ever done an escape room? They are super fun adventures for groups and families! In the return of one of my favorite camps, your campers get to create their own escape room! We will spend the week working on simple puzzles, different tricks, hidden compartments, and word games. Then the campers will put all the best tricks together along with a theme, and create their own Escape Room at the Fab Lab! On Friday, we invite the parents of the campers to come in and try to beat the escape room in teams!  *Hint: in the years we have done this camp, only five sets of parents have ever made it before the time runs out*

Minecraft Teams is all about building! Whether it is building traps, mazes, and clever tricks to fool the other team, or building trust and understanding with your teammates! We will spend all week in teams, building defenses around your home base. The other team is busy doing the same, and one button push is all it takes to make the home base go boom! At the end of the week, there will be a timed competition to see who can blow up the other’s base first! This summer camp teaches teamwork, planning skills, and strategy. Also don’t worry, we don’t spend all week playing Minecraft. There are plenty of off-computer planning sessions as well!

If you are reading this, then you already know that electronics and robotics are everywhere in our society. Even if you are somehow reading this on a printed page, there were at least seven different computers and at least one physical machine involved in getting you the information! This week we will talk about electronics and robotics, building some simple and not-so-simple projects throughout the week. Full of practical knowledge, we will leave the math alone and stick to the building side of things, to make sure that every camper knows the basics of how our electrically run world works.

Modding computer programs is an essential skill in today’s world. Whether it is creating an app or making that darned SQL chart behave at work, we are constantly messing around with the rules that make our technology work, to make it work better for us! In Minecraft Mods, we start on that journey by creating our own mods in Minecraft! From visual learning for beginners to advanced javascript, the software we use is friendly no matter what skill level you come in at, and of course our camp counselors are here to help as well. We will spend the week making new weapons, new gear, and even new mobs and biomes!

Technology has always been something humans are good at. Back at the dawn of recorded history, we were building pyramids (no aliens involved), creating weapons to challenge our environment, and using science to turn lead into gold! (If you don’t think we have accomplished that last one, I urge you to look into the cost of electronic solder these days.) In Medieval makers (which is totally one of the hardest words to spell, btw), we will spend the week creating some of the great inventions of the middle ages. We will make swords and shields, personal catapults, design castles and kingdoms, and end the summer with a jousting competition on our wheeled horse, DesCartes (Get it?).
