Great for ages 8 – 12
It is getting to be that time again! Our summer camps are designed in-house, so you never have to worry about a canned curriculum, or a bunch of projects your kids have already done at school. Each year we try to add two new offerings, and keep the most popular camps from the last five years.
The general trend is that morning camps are quieter, computer based camps, and afternoon camps are usually full of projects and making more physical things. Either way, we are very active in our camps, and even the really computer based ones (like Minecraft camps) only have your camper on the computer for around an hour or so per day. The rest of the time is spent planning, learning, and designing in other ways.
A typical schedule per day:
7:45am – Early drop-off begins
9:00am – Morning camp begins
12:00pm – Morning camp ends
1:00pm – Afternoon camp begins
4:00pm – Afternoon camp ends
5:15pm – Late pick-up ends
You can choose all of the options for a full day, and each week will cost you $560. You can also choose just one camp and it will cost $250 for that week. You can mix and match, pick and choose, and adjust as needed per week. Make sure to look at the rules and FAQ pages to learn about refund policy, safety policies, and medications/restrictions policies.
One last thing many people ask: What happens between Morning and Afternoon camps? If you sign your camper up for both, we will keep them safe for the hour of lunch. Make sure you pack them a lunch for those days! We keep them safe, but can’t feed them. Same for snacks. We have a snack/recess break each camp, and the camper should pack a snack!
Policies, Procedures, and FAQ
Everyone is expected to be aware of their own bodies and their own property. There are a lot of machines and tools at the FabLab. Some are dangerous if handled incorrectly. Some are dangerous if handled at all. And some are expensive to purchase, run, and maintain. There is no running or playing rough in any area of the Lab. If a person does not handle equipment correctly and is a danger to themselves or others, they can be asked to leave for the day, week, or full summer. There will not be refunds for any camper leaving due to behavior issues.
What to Wear
Campers should always wear closed toed shoes with a wrap around heel. Sandals are fine, but they should have something in the back holding them onto the foot, and should cover the toes. Shoes also need to stay on for the full day. Any of the floors in the Lab can have chemicals or materials that are dangerous for bare feet. Students should bring hair ties if their hair is longer than shoulder length. We may use equipment that hair needs tied back for safety. Other than that, they can wear what they feel comfortable in.
Food and Drink
Everyday, each camper should bring a reusable water bottle, a snack for snack time (one per camp if they are here all day), and a lunch if they are staying between camps. They can also bring money for the vending machine, but realize that the snacks they are going to get are not apples and protein bars. There is candy, chips, etc. The machine takes change and ones, it won’t take a $5 bill.
Sunscreen
Campers should bring sunscreen if that is something you want them to have; but THEY are responsible for applying it. (They can ask for employee help, but we will not be able to enforce them to wear it.)
Personal Entertainment
Campers can bring a handheld gaming device, a book, art supplies, etc. to entertain themselves during lunch or early drop/late pick-up. We sometimes will not allow them to use the computer lab before or after camps.
Behavior Expectations
Good behavior is pretty mandatory. That does not mean kids can’t get frustrated or have a bad day, just that they can not take it out on others. There is a lot of equipment around that can be very bad for health if it is run into or used wrong. If they have behavior issues WE NEED TO KNOW. If they have been kicked out of other camps before, WE NEED TO KNOW. If they exhibit non-traditional behaviors like those found on the autism spectrum, other neuro-divergence, or need an accommodation of any kind, we love to include all perspectives. We also need to know ahead of time so we can make arrangements if they need a quiet space or a reset time if things get too hectic for them. If they have a paraeducator during the school year, they MUST have one for our camps as well. We are not a part of the school system and we do not have the same resources to provide one-on-one assistance. If you have questions, email [email protected] BEFORE you register so we can get the details worked out.
All campers MUST keep hands to themselves and not roughhouse. This is an ongoing problem with siblings. Even if there are two brothers who play-wrestle ‘all the time at home’ or have a habit of doing other sibling behaviors that they would not do to anyone else, they CAN NOT do those things at the FabLab. Other campers do not see two brothers being brothers, they see one kid beating up another kid and getting away with it. We have a zero bullying policy and we will enforce it. Kids sent home for bullying won’t come back and won’t receive a refund. Even if it is a sibling. Even if they were just having a bad day.
Aside from physical bullying, the FabLab is a place where everyone should feel free to be themselves (as long as it is not practicing to be the next John Wick). We will respect the camper’s chosen name, respect their pronouns, and respect whatever your child wants to wear as normal every day wear. We won’t allow verbal abuse, although we do understand that everyone is human, and everyone can sometimes make mistakes, or be unaware they are being hurtful. That being said, purposeful hurtfulness is not tolerated.
Medications and Allergies
If a camper has medication they need to take, we need to know about it. If they are responsible enough to take it themselves with no adverse reactions, that is fine and they can carry it. We DO need to know about it so we can check in to make sure it was taken on time. Also there are two people who can be responsible for medications at our camps; the camper themselves (if they are responsible enough) or US. There is not a third option where another sibling also at the camp is responsible for making sure their sibling takes medication. We need to know.
Let us know about any allergies, especially if it may involve an EpiPen or similar. If there is a mild peanut allergy, but they can be around nuts, let us know and we will make sure all the kids know at the beginning of the week. If they will swell up if they see a picture of JIF peanut butter, we need to know so we can warn the kids AND the parents about lunch options, as well as make sure our vending machine is not full of allergens. If they may need an EpiPen , let us know. We can hold it or they can have it where they feel comfortable accessing it.
Refund Policy
If you need a refund on a camp that is more than two weeks away, you get a full 100% refund on that camp. If you have to cancel within two weeks of the camp, you will get a 50% refund on that camp. If you cancel within six days of the camp starting, you won’t get a refund for that camp.
We are a small nonprofit and we rely on the funding from the camps to pay for the supplies, staff, rent, and that sweet, sweet air conditioning. If you cancel far enough in advance, we can find another camper to fill up that space. If you cancel right before a camp, we have already spent that money on our programming and have no hope of getting it back. Exceptions for unforeseen events and emergencies can be made.
Scholarships
We accept external scholarships, and sometimes we have a limited number of internal scholarships available. If you want/need a scholarship, let us know by emailing [email protected] for details. Internal scholarships are usually only half of the cost of one camp. There are outside scholarships that can cover the full amount, and we try to keep a list for those who ask. It is completely the responsibility of the parent or guardian to secure external scholarships.
No one involved in the camps know who the scholarship recipients are. Kirk (the director of the FabLab) might know, but he sucks at names, so he still won’t know. Not even the summer camp staff know. It is no one’s business but yours.

Minecraft Teams (Morning June 9th through June 13th, 2025)
Don’t tell your kids this, but Minecraft is a great way to learn! Studies are showing that kids that play Minecraft do better in physical sciences like Chemistry later in life! This camp is not about letting your kids play Minecraft all day. The campers form teams and have to design defenses for their base, which BLOWS UP if the other team reaches it! They have all week to work as a team designing and building traps and defenses. The last day of camp, they get to go head-to-head with another team, to see who can blow up the other…

Building the Best (Afternoon June 9th through June 13th, 2025)
This is one of my favorites! We will spend each day trying to make the best of something! Will it be the tower that can reach the highest? Will it be the slingshot that can throw the farthest? Will it be the boat that holds the most weight before sinking? Each day is a new adventure, where kids will sometimes work in small groups and sometimes work individually. This camp teaches a lot about physics and design. Sometimes lady luck still gets the upper hand!

Spy Camp! (Afternoon June 16th through 20th, 2025)
One of my favorite comics growing up was Spy vs. Spy. I loved the way each character would outsmart the other, and sometimes outsmart themselves! This camp will focus on a different spy activity each day, from codes and code breaking to secret hiding spaces, spy gadgets, and the arts of misdirection. We will spend some time outdoors, some time coding on the computers, and some time creating our own gadgets and devices! Come and join us as we delve into the world of misdirection!

Animation Camp (Morning, June 23rd through June 27th, 2025)
Animation has been around since long before movies. Humans have been creating the illusion of motion for thousands of years. Now animation is used everywhere, from full films like Toy Story to small things like pop-up ads on your phone (I didn’t say all animation was used for good). We will spend a week learning about different types of animation, from stop-motion to computer animation. We will go into the 12 rules of animation, and learn about storyboarding, scripting, and practical effects as well. There will also be an animation show spectacular at the end of the week for parents!

Designing in 3D is more than just using a 3D printer. We will study different types of 3D design throughout the week, including using sculpture with clay, armatures with wire, stacking methods with cardboard, forced perspective techniques, and designing using 3D modeling software. Being able to picture things in 3 dimensions is one of the most important skills for artists and engineers to have! Explore and play with different methods this week and build up your skills, or gain some new ones!

Pick-up as late as 5:15pm! Are you still at work until 5? With the late pick-up option, we will keep your camper safe and sound until you can get there to pick them up. Our camps end at 4pm, but with late pick-up, you can get to the Lab as late as 5:15pm! Much like our early drop-off, there are no extra activities during this time, so if they want to bring something to do (like a gaming system, book, or hobby) that is totally cool with us. We will keep them safe until you can pick them up!

Modifying the rules has always been a popular pastime for humanity, and with this camp, your camper will learn how to modify the rules for Minecraft! From creating a Batman Grappling Hook to making a pair of boots that let you jump 30 feet in the air, the rules are your plaything! Take that, Gravity! Our software starts off with visual programming for…

Medieval Makers (Afternoon, August 18th through August 22nd, 2025)
Technology has always been something humans are good at. We will make swords and shields, personal catapults, design castles and…
